The Unquiet Grave

This was for an assignment in my Graphic Design class where we had to construct a book around a typeface we were assigned. I got Gill Sans, a font developed in England in the 1920's. The designer of the font wanted to go for a classic yet modern feel, so I decided to have some fun with the illustrations; oddly, most people didn't really illustrate anything for their books. I chose an old English ballad called "The Unquiet Grave" to base the font and illustrations around. I made the environment modern, along with the font, while keeping the "story" ancient; I burned the sides of my paper to make those look old as well. It's a deeply depressing ballad, but then, I imagine the time it was written wasn't a big bucket of fun. I had a lot of fun with this, and when I finally get the whole book back, I'll post a picture of it.

The font was printed on transparencies, so the drawings were separate from the type.
